The Cubs swept the Braves 15-9 and 8-2 in a double header on 8/15.
By sweeping the double header, the Cubs completed the 2010 regular season with a 15-1 record. This is the best
regular season record the team has ever had. The Cubs had never won 15 games in a regular season before, congrats!
The Cubs second game was a little more smooth
sailing as they scored 3 runs in the first two innings for a 3-0 lead. The Braves bounced back with 2 runs in the
third, but the Cubs answered with runs in the third and fourth for a 5-2 lead. As in game 1, the Braves were held
scoreless after the third inning. The Cubs added 3 runs in the 6th for 8-2 final.
John Gordon went the 7 inning distance on teh mound allowing 2 runs
on just 3 hits. He did allow 3 walks, but struck out 5 to pick up his 4th win of the year to go along with a team
record 4 saves.
There were a few big plays on defense. In game 2, Earl Carpenter made a great throw from left field to the plate to nail
a Brave runner trying to score from second in the first inning. Paul Sonnett also made a nice effort on that play to
dive and tag the runner out at the plate. The other big play in game 2 was turned in by Alex Scott in the 4th inning.
The score was still tight with the Cubs leading 4-2, but the Braves first two batters had reached. The third batter
of the inning hit a line drive, but Alex was there to make the play and tag out the runner on second. Alex thought
about throwing to first for the triple play, but swallowed the ball. It was still a huge play to squash the Braves
threat. The Braves only had one base runner for the rest of the game as John set down 10 of the last 11 batters.
The Cubs scored a first inning run on a two out double by Paul. Earl led off the second with walk and he scored on
the first of two Tom Barnes sac flies in the game. Ricker reached with a single and later scored on an error. Alex
led off the third with a double and scored on a John Gordon single. Chris Ricker had a one out walk in the 4th and
scored on a two out single by Tim Shaver. The Cubs broke open teh 5-2 game with a 3 run 6th. Paul Sonnett led off
with a single. Ken Hamm followed with a bomb to ricght center for a 2 run homer! Dennis scored later in the inning
on a Tom Barnes sac fly.
