The Cubs moved to 11-1 with a 8-3 and 12-0 sweep of the Brewers on 7/25.
On a day where the Cubs were missing the three pitchers who throw the most innings on the team, up step two unsung
starters who each go the 7 inning distance holding the Brewers to 3 runs and 7 hits the entire day. Wow! Ken
Hamm started game one and allowed 3 runs, including two meaningless runs in the bottom of the 7th when the score
was 8-1. Ken did not allow his first hit until the 4th inning. Ken was clutch in this one as the Cubs scored
2 in the first and did not score again until the 5th to make it 3-1. Ken held the Brewers at bay until the Cubs
exploded for 5 runs in the 7th to open up the game to 8-1.
I don't remember too many spectacular defensive plays in the game. The biggest I remember are a scoop Brad Adams
made at first on a throw from third that Roberto made a great play on a slow roller and Brad capped off the play.
Dennis Fontecchio nailed a Brewer runner at the plate in the 6th inning of game 1 when thye score was 3-1. The Brewers
had a first and third and Dennis had the runner on first in a rundown and managed to whirl and throw out the runner
breaking for the plate to end the 6th.
In game 1, the first two batters scored for the Cubs, but despite having runners reach at least second in th esecond,
third and fourth innings, did not score again until the 5th. The Cub sblew th egam eopen with a 5 run 7th.
Earl Carpenter was 3-3 with a double and run scored. Brad Adems was 2-3 with the critical 5th inning RBI.
The Cub sscored 2 in the first when Alex Scott led off with a single. Rich Schwarz bunted and Alex Scored when the
throw went into right field allowing Rich to reach second. Rich scored two ground outs later. Andy Luckhardt led
off the 5th with a HBP and scored one out later on Brad's single. Earl started the 7th inning rally with a one
out single. Eddie doubled him home and the Ricker, Dennis and Andy followed with RBI singles. Brad brought home
the last run with a 2 out RBI single.
