The Cubs continued their torrid start to the season by sweeping the Phillies 10-4 and 5-2 on 6/27.
The Cubs received a scare in both ends of the double header, but managed to answer the bell each time the Phillies made things interesting. In the second game, the Cubs had trouble scoring but pushed across single runs in the second and sixth for a 2-0 lead. Give credit to the Phillies though as they battled back and scored single runs in the 6th and 7th to tie the game and send it to extra innings. The Cubs scored three times in the top of the 8th with Dennis Fontecchio driving in the go ahead run with a two out single and Brad Adams following with a 2 run double.

John Gordon pitched the second game and was dominant. He retired the first 13 batters before giving up an infield single in the 5th. John went all 8 innings and allowed 7 hits and 1 earned run while picking up 8 Ks.

Cubs had another great day defensively. Tim Shaver made a very nice backhanded catch in deep right center. Dennis Fontecchio had a great relay throw to PJ O'Toole to cut down a Phillie runner at the plate in the 6th to keep the game at 2-0. Alex Scott had has typical great day at short and Chris Ricker had another nice day at third. Brad Adams solidifies the infield with his play at first base.

The Cubs had 12 hits in game 2. Dennis Fontecchio had 2 hits in both games and should have been 6-6 on the day. His two outs were bombs that forced outfielders make great plays. We already mentioned the clutch two out hits by Dennis and Brad in the 8th inning of game 2. In the second inning of game two, Eddie Murray plated the first run of the game with a single. Tim Shaver reached first in the 6th on a critical two out hustle play with Dennis going from second to third. Tim ended up stealing second and Dennis scored when the throw was mishandled by the second baseman. It was the second run of the second game and proved to be a big run.
