The Cubs continued their torrid start to the season by sweeping the Phillies 10-4 and 5-2 on 6/27.
The Cubs are now 7-1 at the end of the first half of the season. They will be off for the July 4th holiday
and resume action on 7/11 against the Mariners in Holliston. The 7-1 start is by far the best start a Cubs
team has ever had. The Cubs welcomed a new player to the squad today, Fred Newhall.
The Cubs received a scare in both ends of the double header, but managed to answer the bell each time the
Phillies made things interesting. In the first game, the Phillies took a 4-1 lead in the top of the 4th inning
and the Cubs responded with a huge 7 run bottom of the 4th.
Tom Barnes went 6 and a third in game one and outside of a 3 run second inning was very solid. Tom gave up
just 4 hits, striking out 3 and walking 2. Mark Grogan got the last two outs of the 7th giving up a single
and striking out the last batter. It was great to see Grogs back on the mound. It was Mark's first
appearance since August 7 of 2005!
Cubs had another great day defensively. There were no errors in game one.
The Cubs had 16 hits in game 1. There were 6 players who had two hits in game 1: Rich Schwarz, Paul Sonnett,
Earl Carpenter, Chris Ricker, Dennis Fontecchio and Brad Adams. With the Cubs trailing 4-1 in the 4th and
Alex Scott at third and Rich Schwarz at second, Paul Sonnett delivered
a double to deep left center scoring both runs. Earl Carpenter followed with a double to tie the game. Then
Eddie Murray, Chris Ricker, Dennis and Brad followed with hits to open up the 8-4 lead. In the 5th inning,
Paul Sonnett doubled home John Gordon and then Earl singled home John for the 10-4 final.
