The Cubs were unable to pick up any key hits to fall to the Orioles 3-0 on 6/13!
The Cubs fell to 4-1 with their first loss since August 9 2009. The Cubs managed just 4 hits on the day.
Tom Barnes was the tough luck starter in this one and took the loss. Tom allowed the first two batters of
the game to reach and the first one scored. After that Tom shut the Orioles down through three innings.
John Gordon pitched 5 innings allowing 2 runs in the 7th on three balls that simply found holes in the
outfield. PJ O'Toole pitched a scoreless 9th.
On defense, the Cubs continue to play solid baseball. They made just one error in this one and executed some
nice plays to get outs on the basepaths including a textbook (OK, maybe not textbook but it was still an out)
rundown on a failed bunt attempt and a gunned out stealing, Paul Sonnett to Dennis Fontecchio. Dennis also
gunned out a runner at the plate.
This was a 1-0 game through 6 innings and the Cubs had runners on in every inning but the 4th and 7th. However
they could not get the key hit with runners in scoring position. The Orioles starter went the distance and
deserves a lot of credit. He pitched a tremendous game striking out 13. Paul Sonnett had the only solidly
hit ball of the 4 hits the Cubs had. PJ had a bunt single and Ken Hamm and Rich Schwarz picked up infield
singles.
