The Cubs beat the Brewers 7-3 in the first game of a double header on 7/19.
The Brewers controlled this game from the outset. In the first inning, the first three batters reached and
the fourth batter hit a deep fly to center for a sac fly. On an absolutely incredible turn of events, starter
Tom Barnes decided to appeal the runner at second and the ump actually called him out! So instead of first and
third with one out, there was just a runner at first and two outs with the Brewers up 1-0. After a stolen base,
a single up the middle seemed certain to score the second run, but Andy Luckhardt threw a bullet from center to
catcher Earl Carpenter to nail the runner at the plate. After the Cubs stranded a runner at third in the bottom
of the first, the Brewers scored a run in the top of the second on a couple errors and then a sac fly. The Cubs
scored a run in the bottom of the second when Andy Luckhardt walked and stole second. After two were out, Mike
Dunn delivered a clutch RBI single to narrow the Cubs deficit to 2-1.
The third inning was the turning point of the game. The Brewers had two quick outs and then three straight
singles to load the bases. Tom induced a ground ball to short to end the threat. The Cubs responded from
that close call to plate 5 runs in the bottom of the 3rd. After an out, Brad Adams walked and then Jeff Fitton
was hit by a pitch. Rich Schwarz bunted between the pitcher and third baseman and after hesitating to throw to
the empty third base, the pitcher had no play at first to load the bases. Alex Scott was hit by a pitch to
tie the game at 2. John Gordon delivered the bases clearing double. John ended up scoring an an errant pickoff
throw to third.
The Brewers scored in the 4th without the benefit of a hit to make this a 6-3 game. The Cubs scored the final
run of the game in the bottom of the 5th on a two out RBI single by Paul Sonnett.
Tom Barnes went the 7 inning distance allowing one earned run. The Brewers first runner of the 7th reached and
made it to second. The next batter hit a grounder to short that Alex Scott threw to Jeff Fitton at third to
nail the runner for the first out of the inning. The next batter hit a grounder back to Tom who threw to Alex
covering second. The throw was low to the first side of the bag. Alex somehow caught the ball while falling
and holding second base with his foot then in the same motion threw to first before crashing to the ground to
complete the game ending double play.
