The Cubs lost an extra inning game in the first game of a double header 8-7 to the Dodgers.
It was a crazy day all the way around. The double header started at 8AM on field in Acton the team had never
played on before. It was a drizzly day and the Cubs had 9 fulltime regular players missing the game. The Cubs
had several players attend for the first time and they played a huge role in the games. Mike Dunn, Don Peterson
and Randy Sabino all played their first games for the Cubs on this day. Scott Carpenter, Matt Corkum and Dave Russo
also filled in to create one of the most uncommon lineups the Cubs have had in years. The second game ended after 5
innings because another game needed to start at 1PM.
Chris Ricker was huge for the Cubs in game one going the distance (8 1/3 innings) on the mound. With Brad Adams,
Tom Barnes, John Gordon, Ken Hamm and PJ O'Toole all missing, the Cubs were without any of their standard pitchers.
Ricker was great, especially considering he hit 3 batters in the first two innings and would have been ejected
from the game if he hit another batter. He battled all game long allowing just 5 earned runs.
On offense, several Cubs had good days. Eddie Murray had a huge bases
loaded double in the 6th inning of the game to turn a 6-4 deficit into a 7-6 lead. Alex Scott was 3-3 with a
walk in game 1. Glenn D'Avanzo hit bullets all over the field, a few of them into outs and still went 2-4 on the
game.
