The Cubs beat the Phillies 22-3 in a mercy rule game. The Cubs scored 11 runs in the 8th inning to blow open
a much tighter game than the score would indicate.
The Cubs beat the Phillies 22-3 in their first game in 4 weeks!
Tom Barnes started and went 7 innings allowing 3 runs. After a tough first inning in which Tom allowed 2 runs,
Tom settled down and kept the Phillies off the board until the 7th. Tom did not have a 1-2-3 inning all day
but made huge pitches to get out of several jams. The biggest jam was in the 5th when the first batter was hit
by a pitch and the next two batters walked to bring up the heart of the Phillies order, batters 3 and 4. Tom
struck both batters out with some nasty pitches and then induced a fly ball to center to end the Phillie rally
and pretty much put the game to rest. Earl Carpenter pitched the 8th and had three ground ball outs and a HBP.
The offense was ridiculous in this one as the Cubs had 21 hits including 5 doubles and 3 triples. Paul Sonnett
and Earl Carpenter had three hits a piece and each had a
triple. Paul had a double and a triple in the 8th inning when the Cubs batted around and scored 11 runs. Eddie
Murray, Ken Hamm, John Gordon, Chris Ricker and Jeff Fitton had two hits each. Jeff had a double and a triple in
his second game as a Cub. Ken Hamm had 4 RBIs and Paul Sonnett and Jeff Fitton had 3 RBIs. Alex Scott, Paul
Sonnett and Rich Schwarz scored 3 times.
