The Cubs beat the Orioles 7-3 on 6/29 to run their recotd to 7 and 3.
The Cubs won a hard fought game over the previously 7-1 Orioles. It was a great team win for
the Cubs with solid pitching and defense and clutch hitting. The Cubs have won 7 of their last 8.
Tom Barnes started and picked up the win going 5 innings allowing 2 earned runs. Tom also made a
great play on the mound saving a run with one of his patented behind the back stabs of a grounder
and his throw just beat the runner to first for the final out of the fourth inning. John Gordon
came in and didn't give the Orioles a chance. John continues to improve each week and he earned
a 4 inning scoreless save in this one. John allowed just 2 hits and 1 walk and two runners were
thrown out stealing so he faced just one over the minimum. John struck out 3.
On defense, the Cubs were very solid making just 2 errors. Paul Sonnett threw out 2 runners trying to
steal. Paul also made a twisting diving catch of a foul pop up, we'll just leave it at that...
There was a nice 6-4-3 double play to end the first with a great stretch by Brad Adams at first. Brad
also made several other nice plays at first on one hoppers and throws off line.
While the Cubs scored 7 runs in this one, the also hit several line drives into outs and it felt like
with a little luck they could have scored a lot more. Dennis Fontecchio was 3-3 with an RBI and run
scored in his best game at the plate this season. Alex Scott and Paul Sonnett were both 2 for 4 with
an RBI and a run scored. Kenny Hamm was also 2 for 4 with an RBI and the only extra base hit for the
Cubs, a bomb of a triple to right center. John Gordon was 1 for 1 with a HBP and a walk and he scored
twice. With the game at 5-3 in the 7th, John and Dennis reached base with no outs. Chris Ricker put
down a great sac bunt and Brad Adams followed with sac fly to score a run. After a walk, Alex Scott
singled in the final run.
