Sun 06/22/2008, Game 1
The Cubs picked up a 6 run first inning and cruised to a 10-4 win over the Dodgers on their way
to a sweep of the 6/22 double header.
The Cubs swept the Dodgers 10-4 and 13-1 on 6/22.
As always for the Cubs, the wins were paces by great pitching and defense. In game 1, Tom Barnes
wasn't feeling well but still got through the first 2 innings allowing 2 unearned runs after bases
loaded jams in each inning. PJ O'Toole finished off the last 5 innings to pick up the win. PJ was
impressive giving up just 3 hits while striking out 7.
On defense, there was just one outstanding play and it was on the second batter of the game.
Alex Scott made a tremendous stop on a hot one hopper between short and third and forced a runner
at third with Rich Wenning applying the tag. Otherwise the Cubs were solid. They made just 1 error in
each game. In game 1, they turned a 1-4-3 DP in the 5th inning and PJ picked a runner off first
in the third inning.
On offense, the Cubs had a good day that was aided by walks and sloppy Dodger defense. In both games
the Cubs jumped out to early first inning leads. In game 1 the Cubs picked up 6 runs and in game 2
the Cubs picked up 5 runs. In game 1, 12 of the 13 players reached base and the first 8 batters all
scored at least one run. Earl Carpenter and PJ O'Toole had run scoring doubles in the first inning
and Tom Barnes capped the rally with a bases loaded single to score 2 runs. The Cubs scored their last
4 runs of the game in the third inning. Earl Carpenter and Ken Hamm had one out singles followed by
a bomb of a triple to right by Alex Scott. Rich Wenning later scored on a Dennis Fontecchio single.
