The Cubs swept the Tigers on a scorching hot day 9-1 and 8-6 on 6/8.
The Cubs have now won 4 straight to lift their record to 4-2 and into second place in the National
League. Despite the oppressive heat, the Cubs played errorless ball for 14 innings on Sunday.
In the second game, the Tigers were rallying in the bottom of the 7th. The Cubs were up 8-4 and the
Tiger batter hit a double to left center which scored a run but a nice throw from Tim Shaver to
Alex Scott who threw a bullet to Earl Carpenter at the plate nailed the runner and was the first out
of the inning. The Tigers rally ended and the Cubs hung on to the 8-5 win.
In game 2 Tom Barnes struggled with the
landing spot on the mound for the first two innings but battled through that and was pretty smooth
for the next 4 innings. In all, Tom went 6 allowing 3 runs just 4 hits with 5 Ks and 8 walks (6 walks
in the first two innings). PJ O'Toole stuck out the final two batters of the game to end the Tigers
final inning rally in game 2.
In the second game, Paul Sonnett (3-4, 2 RBIs, 2 runs) had
2 deep doubles. Earl Carpenter filled out the stat sheet by going 2-3 with 3 RBIs, a run, a double,
a triple and a sac fly. PJ O'Toole had a long double and Brad Adams crushed a ball to right center for
a triple. Tom Barnes and Tim Shaver had two hits in game 2. The Cubs manufactured a run in the 4th
inning of game 2 on a Tom Barnes single, Chris Ricker walk, a beautiful sac bunt by Brad Adams and a
groundout to second base. That extended the Cubs lead to 4-2 at that point.
