Sun 06/08/2008, Game 1
The Cubs used a 4 run first to overcome a 1-0 deficit and never looked back in taking the
first game of the double header from the Tigers 9-1.
The Cubs swept the Tigers on a scorching hot day 9-1 and 8-6 on 6/8.
The Cubs have now won 4 straight to lift their record to 4-2 and into second place in the National
League. Despite the oppressive heat, the Cubs played errorless ball for 14 innings on Sunday.
The only two great plays I remember came in the last inning of each game. In the first game, the
Cubs ended it with a nice 1-4-3 double play, John Gordon feeding Dennis Fontecchio to Brad Adams.
John Gordon had an outstanding game 1 pitching performance. After allowing a run in the first inning
when the first two batters reached, John allowed just 3 hits the rest of the way while striking
out 8 including the side in the 5th and walked no one.
The Cubs hit more bombs in this double header than I can remember in a long time. Matt Corkum started
the bomb fest with his first plate appearance in 2008. He hit a double over the left fielders head.
Paul Sonnett (3 RBIs, long double), Alex Scott (2 runs) and John Gordon went 2-3 in the first game. Earl Carpenter
was 3-3 to help pace the 13 hit attack.
