The Cubs won a huge road game against the National League foe Brewers 14-3.
After a bizarre set of events including a last minute change of fields with no bases, and both
teams without their regular game day managers, the Cubs seemed most resilient winning this game
with dominate pitching and extremely patient hitters, even after the extended time off for both teams.
The three Cubs pitchers scattered only 9 hits with 4 walks and 7 strike outs. Tom Barnes picked off
one runner and nearly a second. The Cubs defense played off the solid performance of the pitchers
with some key plays as well. Ken Hamm caught several foul outs, while Eddie Murray snagged a liner
and promptly doubled up a runner at second. Paul Sonnett, with his hamstring pulled earlier in the
game beating a throw to first, hopped one footed to the screen on a missed strike 3 and threw out the
runner at first by two steps. Peter Murphy made a lateral dive in the left center gap to deny the
beginning of a last inning rally and with only 8 men left with no second baseman, and shortstop
John Gordon ranging waaaaay to his left cleanly fielded a grounder at second to throw the runner
out to end the game.
The Cubs hitters were equally strong. With the top of the order getting 7 opportunities to swing
away, Brewer pitching just couldn't command the strike zone. Every Cubs hitter with at least 2 at
bats received a free pass. Stars of the game were Gordon 4 - 5 with 3 runs scored and 2 rbi,
Sonnett 4 - 6, Murray 3 - 6 with 2 runs scored and 2 rbi.
