The Cubs suffered one of the worst losses in team history in their home opener versus the Cardinals.
Wow what an ugly finish to a good game. The Cubs and Cardinals were tied at 4 through 6 innings and
then the Cubs fell apart giving up 4 runs in the 7th, 9 in the 8th and 3 more in the 9th for a
20-4 loss. The only positive from this game was no one got hurt.
Tom Barnes started and gave up 4 runs through 6 innings. Tom was very good and struck out 5 while
walking 1.
Offensively, it was a quiet day for the Cubs bats. They had 2 singles in the first and 9th innings
and a single in the second for the 5 hits. Paul Sonnett, Eddie Murray, Earl Carpenter had singles
while Tom Barnes picked up two singles.
Just a day to forget for the most part. The Cubs did turn a nice 4-6-3 double play in the third,
Chris Ricker to Dennis Fontecchio to Ken Hamm. Tom Barnes also picked a runner off second in the
second inning with Chris Ricker and Earl Carpenter involved in the rundown.
