The Cubs beat the Dodgers 14-8 on 8/5 to close out the regular season with the best record in the league!
The Cubs played the final regular season game of 2007 on 8/5 versus the Dodgers and found a way to
win for the 13th time in 16 games. The 2007 season goes down as the best in Cubs history with that
13-3 mark. The club had been 13-4 in in 1997 and 2003. The Cubs have had 2 4 game winning streaks
and also closed the season on a 5 game winning streak. After losing the first game of the season,
the Cubs have gone 13-2!
The Cubs used three pitchers in this one. John Gordon started and went the first 5 to pick up the
win. John allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits while striking out 9 batters. Earl Carpenter went the next
two innings for just his second appearance of the year. Luis Tiant closed it out by pitching the
final two innings allowing 1 run and hit.
I don't remember there being any highlight reel plays in this one on defense. The infield was in
terrible shape which impacted both teams. There were some errors in the infield, but that really
deserves an asterick because of the field conditions. The team made the plays it needed to in
order for the team to win. Earl Carpenter and Tim Shaver caught in the absense of Paul Sonnett.
With 14 runs being scored, a lot of Cubbies contributed to the win. Luis Tiant got things started
with a huge 2 run triple in the first. On the day, Luis was 2-4 with 4 RBIs. Luis also delivered
a two out two run single in the 5th. Tim Shaver capped the four run first with a two out RBI single.
The Cubs had 6 players score 2 runs, they were Rich Schwarz, Eddie Murray, Earl Carpenter, Luis, Brad
Adams and John Gordon. Andy Luckhardt picked up two hits and Ken Hamm had a triple in the 8th.
