Box Score

The Cubs beat the 11-1 Orioles by a score of 6-3 on 7/22!
What a great win for the Cubs on 7/22! The Orioles had an 11-1 record coming into the game and were 20-3 versus the Cubs in the regular season 12 year history of the Cubs. On this day the Cubs were the better team. The Cubs played a double header against an 8-2 team last week and then played an 11-1 team this week and came out with a 2-1 record to improve to 10-3.

The Cubs split this game between 3 pitchers who threw 3 innings a piece. Billy Bracken started and allowed 1 run on 4 hits. A bumb left thigh forced Billy out of the game. Tom Barnes picked up the win allowing no runs and just 1 hit. Tommy looked very sharp in the game and picked a runner off in the 6th. John Gordon picked up the save allowing 2 runs, only 1 of which was earned.

The Cubs played solid defense until a sloppy final inning. There was a nice 6-4-3 double play in the first, Dennis to Ricker to Brad. Paul had a great pickoff of a runner at first from his catcher position. Luis Tiant had a solid game at third making one tremendous diving play down the line and fielding a couple slow roller tough plays.

The offensive story of this one for the Cubs was their last 5 runs, covering 5 innings, scored on 2 out base hits. Clutch hitting all up and down the lineup. With the Cubs trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the 4th, Billy drew a leadoff walk. After a sac bunt, Eddie Murray (2-2 with a double and triple, 1 RBI 2 runs) tripled to left to score a run. After an out, Kenny delivered the first 2 out clutch hit, a ground rule double to deep center. The Cubs then scored single runs in the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th innings not allowing the Orioles to get any momentum. In the 5th, the Orioles starter had recorded 2 outs on 2 pitches when Rich Wenning stepped up to the plate. Rich worked the count and then hit a line shot double to left. Tim Shaver (2-2 triple, single, RBI run) then followed with a bomb to right for a triple. That extended the Cubs led to 3-1 after 5. In the sixth, Chris Ricker (2-3 RBI, run) led off with a single. After 2 outs, Ricker was on second. John Gordon delivered a run scoring single to right to make the Cubs lead 4-1. The Orioles scored a run in the 7th to make it 4-2, but the Cubs responded in the bottom half. Eddie led off with a double to left center and after 2 line outs to left was standing at third. Earl Carpenter drove Eddie home with a line drive single to right. The Cubs made it 6-2 in the 8th when they again struck with 2 outs and no one on base. Tim Shaver singled and PJ O'Toole singled Tim to second. Chris Ricker stepped up with a line drive single to left to score Tim.
