Sun 07/15/2007, Game 2
The Cubs beat the Cardinals 8-4 behind John Gordon's 4 hitter and Earl Carpenter's 3 run first
inning bomb to gain a split of the double header.
In game 2, John Gordon threw another great game allowing just 4 hits and Earl Carpenter set the tone
by smashing a 3 run bomb with 2 outs in the first inning. John went all 7 innings allowing just 1
hit through the first 5 innings. With two out and no one in the 6th, John gave up 3 hits driving
in three runs. John pitched a 1-2-3 7th inning to close out the 8-4 win.
The defense was solid
except for a momentary lapse in the 4th inning that led to a Cardinals run.
All 8 runs scored in
just 3 innings. In the first inning, Eddie Murray and Paul Sonnett reached on one out singles. Kenny
Hamm followed with a single but Eddie was thrown out at the plate. Up stepped Earl for a clutch 2 out
3 run bomb to right. Everyone in attendance said it was the furthest they had seen a right handed
batter
the ball to right at our field. In the second inning, the Cubs doubled the lead when Dennis Fontecchio
led off with a walk and then Tim Shaver hit a one out triple. Rich Schwarz drove in Tim with a double.
After Chris Ricker reached on an error and Brad Adams walked the bases were full for John Gordon who
hit a deep drive to right for a sac fly to score Rich. The Cubs tacked on two big runs in the bottom
of the 5th when Rich Wenning led off with a single. After a walk and a fielders choice the Cubs had
runners at first and third with 2 outs when Brad Adams hit a clutch 2 out RBI single with Chris Ricker
running on the pitch from first. John Gordon followed with a single to score Chris.
