Box Score

The Cubs lost game 1 to the Cardinals 7-0. The Cubs were never able to overcome a 5 run second inning which made the score 6-0. Their best chance came in the third when they had the bases loaded with one out but were unable to plate any runs. Tom Barnes was the starter and had a good outing except for the blimp in inning 2. Tom struck out 8 batters in the 6 inning complete game.

The Cubs played their second consecutive errorless game in game 1. The Cubs turned a 1-6-3 DP in the 4th and then Brad Adams made the defensive play of the day in the 5th at first snaring a hot one hopper down the first base line and beating the fast runner to first.

The Cubs only managed 5 hits in game 1. Those 5 hits came from just 3 hitters as Luis Tiant was 2-2 with a triple and double, Eddie Murray was 2-2 with a double and single and Tom Barnes was 1-1 with a single. Although Paul Sonnett's line was 0-2 in the book, he hit two bullets that were unfortunately right at the left fielder who was playing very deep. Apparently the Cards had a good scouting tape for Paul.
