Box Score

The Cubs played a great game on 8/13 to beat the Red Sox 9-3.
Just a great game by the Cubs, with all 13 players contributing to the victory. As always, it started on the mound. Ken Hamm had his second consecutive good start, allowing 3 runs in 7 innings to earn his first win as a Cub. Ken allowed just 6 hits with 4 Ks and he picked off 2 runners at first. Brad Adams followed with two impressive scoreless innings. Brad struck out 2 and allowed just 1 hit.

Defensively, there were just 2 errors and some very good plays. There were 2 plays in particular that stand out (besides the pickoffs). In the first inning, with the Red Sox already up 1-0, the Red Sox had a runner at third with just 1 out. The Red Sox cleanup hitter smashed a one hopper to Luis Tiant at third who threw home to Earl Carpenter who applied the tag for a huge run saving out. The second key play, was turned in the 7th. The Red Sox had just closed the gap to 6-3 and had a runner at third with 2 outs. The second batter in the order hit a sinking liner to left field the Mark Grogan came in on and slid on his knees to make the inning ending catch and preserve the 3 run lead.

4 of the 9 Cubs runs were scored with 2 outs, showing the clutch nature of the hitting on this day. Luis and Ken Hamm had huge days. Luis was 3-3 with 3 runs scored and an RBI. Ken was 2-3 with a triple and a double and each hit drove in 2 runs for a 4RBI day and 1 run scored. The Cubs scored all 9 runs in just 3 frames. Those frames went like this:
bottom of the 2nd trailing 1-0, Cubs score 4
Luis hits a 1 out single followed by Earl Carpenter reaching on a single that went through the pitcher's glove. Ken followed with a 2 run triple. After an out, Tim Shaver hit a huge RBI triple and then Brad Adams also picked up a two out RBI with a single.
bottom of the 4th ahead 4-1, Cubs score 2
With 2 outs and no one on base, Paul Sonnett and Luis reach via singles and then Earl Carpenter hits a bomb to left center for a double scoring 2 and ending the day for the Red Sox starter.
bottom of the 7th ahead 6-3, Cubs score 3
Alex Scott leads off the inning with a walk and Eddie Murray is then hit by a pitch. After an out, Luis singles home a run. With two outs, Ken hits a shot for a 2 RBI double to left center.
