Sun 07/30/2006, Game 2
The Cubs won the second game of a double header against the Cardinals 2-1 to sweep the critical
National League matchup. This moved the Cubs into sole possession of second place at 8-2.
Game 2 was all about Andy Schultz and tremendous Cubs defense. Andy, pitching with a bad hammy
managed to go the distance allowing just a first inning run. Andy also started a great double
play in the second inning on a liner to his right. He whirled and threw a bullet to first to
get the runner. The Cubs scored to tie to the game at 1 in the bottom of the first. Luis Tiant
hit a double to right center and with 2 outs Paul Sonnett drilled a double off the wall in left.
Everyone thought that ball was out of the park when he hit it, but came up just short. The third
inning proved to be pivotal. In the top half, the Cardinals loaded the bases on a walk and 2 singles
with 1 out. The Cardinals cleanup hitter Matt Sandock was up and he hit the ball hard but it was
one hopper to Tim Shaver at second base who made a perfect flip to Alex Scott to turn a beautiful
4-6-3 double play to end the frame with no runs. In the bottom half, the Cubs scored the last
run of the game without getting a hit. Rich Schwarz led off with a walk, stole second and moved
to third on an Alex Scott grounder to second. Luis Tiant walked. Luis then got into a run down
between first and second and Rich scored during the run down. The infield defense in game 2 was
outstanding. Tim Shaver made several nice plays at second. Alex was flawless at short. Luis
was solid at third and made a great play on a bunt attempt in the top of the 7th just
nipping a fast runner at first for the second out. Paul threw out 2 base stealers on the day, one
in game one and a sweet one in the 4th inning of game 2 with a throw that Tim didn't even have to
move his glove for to apply the tag. Chris Ricker and Mark Grogan played perfect defense in right
and left field. There were no errors in game 2 for the Cubs!
