The Cubs overcame a 4-0 deficit after the first inning in game one and roared back to take a
16-8 win over the Cardinals. Mark Grogan delivered a huge 2 out 2 RBI triple to left center
in the top of the second to start the comeback. Mark ended up with 4 RBIs for the game. The
Cubs picked up 5 runs in the 3rd and never
trailed in the game again. The final three runs of that inning scored on 2 walks and a HBP.
Tom Barnes struggled in the first inning giving up the 4 runs, but settled in and didn't allow
a run until the 5th when the Cubs were already up 12-4. Game 1 also marked the return to action
for original Cubbie Dave Russo who played all seven innings at first and was 1-3 with a RBI and
run scored. There were contributions all up and down the lineup in game 1 with 10 of the 11
batters scoring a run. Alex Scott was 4-4
with a walk and 2 runs scored. Luis Tiant was 2-5 (including a double to the wall) with 4 RBIs
and 2 runs scored. Tim Shaver was 2-4 with an RBI and run. Tim also turned a very nice double
play in the 5th inning when the Cardinals were trying to mount a comeback. Tom Barnes was 1-2
with a sac fly,
walk, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Chris Ricker was 2-3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Rich
