The Cubs were shutout 5-0 by the Braves on 7/9.
For the first time in the history of the Cubs team, they were shutout in a 9 inning game. The Cubs
pitched very well and played a great defensive game, but just couldn't get the key hit with runners
on base. Andy Schultz went 6 innings allowing 3 runs and Tom Barnes went 3 innings allowing 2 runs.
The Cubs made just 1 error all day and it wasn't a costly one. On offense, Brad Adams had a bomb
double and a line out to right. Ken Hamm had 2 singles and that was about it for offensive highlights.
There were only
2 1-2-3 innings, and the Cubs had the bases full in the first and first and third with 1 out in 5th,
but couldn't capitalize on the chances. Earl Carpenter hit a bomb in the first to left with the bases
full and 2 outs but the left fielder was playing so deep it turned into an easy out. In the 4th with
runners on first and second Earl hit a hard grounder right over the second base bag that the Braves
second baseman made a nice play on for the forceout.
