Box Score

For the second consecutive season, the Cubs were knocked out of the playoffs in the first round by the Cardinals. This was a very tough loss as the game was tied at 4 after 8 innings. The Cardinals led off the 9th with a swinging bunt single and then a huge one out groundball single drove in the winning run. The Cubs hit the ball hard in the 9th, but couldn't find a way to tie the score or win the game.

Andy Schultz had a monster game, going all 9 innings on the mound and allowing just 3 earned runs while striking out 7. It felt like Andy's best start of the season, the Cardinals did not hit a lot of balls hard in this one, but had 8 hits and found a way to get the clutch RBI hits when needed. At the plate, Andy led the Cubs attach going 2-3 with a run scored.

Dennis Fontecchio also had a good day at the plate going 2-4 scoring a run and driving in another. Glenn Legault returned from injury after at least 2 months off and had a great game at the plate going 2-3. Earl Carpenter had an RBI on a 1-3 day. Other Cubs hits were collected by Andy Luckhardt, Eddie Murray and Rich Schwarz.

I'm sure there were some good plays in the field, but since I'm writing this 6 weeks after the game I can't remember them...

It was just one of those days for the Cubs. They had a 4-1 lead after 6, but the Cardinals scored 2 in the 7th, 1 in the 8th and the run described above in the 9th to win it. The Cubs had 3 guys thrown out at home and missed other opportunities to blow the game open early.
