Box Score

Wow what a win for the Cubs today and their 5th straight! Great pitching for 6 innings by Andy Schultz, allowing 1 run to pick up the win. Tom Barnes pitched a scoreless final 3 innings allowing just 2 runners and striking out 5 to pick up the save. The bat of Earl Carpenter continues to sizzle. Earl went 2-3 raising his average to .625 on the year. Today, Earl launched a three run bomb in the fifth inning erasing a 1-0 deficit. Eddie Murray led off the 5th with a walk and Paul Sonnett doubled Eddie to third before "the one legged blast" (TOLB). TOLB cleared the fence in left center by a good 20 feet marking just the second ball to be hit out of Mooney in our 3 seasons of playing there. TOLB was made possible by the fact the Earl has a right quad injury which prevents Earl from running. The Cubs picked up a huge insurance run in the 7th when Andy Luckhardt hit a 1 out triple and Eddie Murray had a 2 out RBI single. Backing up the great pitching today was possibly the best defensive game the Cubs have played in a couple seasons. Tom Barnes, playing right field, made a great running catch down the line in right on a liner. Also in that second inning, Rich Schwarz threw out two consecutive Red Sox trying to score from second on singles to center. Tim Shaver made the tag on both plays and Brad Adams made a nice cut and relay on the second one. In the 7th, Chris Ricker made a great play on a slow roller to third just nipping the runner at first.
