The Cubs won their 100th game as a franchise and first game of the 2005 season with an 8-7 win
over the Red Sox. Several clutch fielding plays, hits and pitching perforamnces allowed the
Cubs to win the tight game.
What a battle this one was. The Cubs built a 3-0 lead after 4 and then both teams scored in each
inning from the 5th to the 7th giving the Brewers the 6-5 lead after 6 and a half. The Cubs tied
it in the bottom half and the scored 6 times in the bottom of the 8th for the 12-6 final.
Brad Adams took the emergency start and was fantastic throwing a no hitter through 4 innings. He
ran out of gas in the 5th and gave up 3 hits and 3 runs. Chris Greig pitched the 6th and 7th and
with a little luck could have been scoreless, but he ended up allowing 3 runs, 1 earned. Chris had
2 balls hit to the outfield that could have been caught but were not which led to the runs. Tom
Barnes finished the last two innings to pick up the win without a allowing a run. It was part of a
great day for Tom who was also 3-3 at the plate with 4 RBIS.
In the field, Peter DiNatale returned and played to mid season form snaring a shallow pop into
center with his back to the plate and turning a big double play, 1-4-3 in the third. Matt Corkum
robbed the leadoff hitter of a hit with a great catch in left on a sinking liner.
At the plate, the Cubs scored in 6 of the 8 innings they batted which was pretty good with an automatic
out in the third spot of the order due to an ejection. The entire lineup contributed today which adds
to the satisfaction of the victory. The Cubs led 3-0 with 2 runs in the second and 1 in the third.
In the second inning, Eddie Murray (2-3 1 double, 1 RBI,
1 run scored) scored on a Brad Adams groundout and Paul Sonnett (2-4 1 double, 2 RBIs, 2 runs) scored
on a Peter DiNatale single on the first pitch he saw this season! Tom Barnes (3-3, 4 RBIs) drove in
Rich Schwarz (3-3, 3 runs) in the third. In a 3-3 deadlock in the bottom of the fifth, Paul Sonnett
scored on a clutch 2 out Matt Corkum single. In the sixth, Tom Barnes had another clutch 2 out RBI
single scoring Rich Schwarz to put the Cubs ahead 5-4. In the 7th, the Cubs were trailing 6-5 and
tied the score when Tim Shaver scored on a Paul Sonnett fielders choice that the first baseman threw
away trying to get Tim at the plate. The Cubs broke the 6-6 tie in the bottom of the 8th by scoring
6 runs. With 1 out, Rich Schwarz singled, and Andy Schultz single Rich to third. Chris Greig drew a
walk to load the bases and Tom Barnes followed with a tie breaking 2 run single. Dennis Fontecchio
hit a run scoring single and Tim Shaver walked to load the bases. After the automatic out, Eddie
Murray had an RBI walk. Paul Sonnett capped the scoring with a 2 run double to left.
The Cubs sustained a couple injuried today and we're hoping for quick recoveries. Andy Schultz pulled
a hammy in his first at bat. Peter DiNatale got a horrible hop on a throw to second from the plate
that went square to his nose. Tough situation for Peter who was playing his first game after breaking
his foot in the off season.
