For the first time in the last 8 years, the Cubs failed to advance to the National League Championship
series. The Cubs had played in the last 7 NLCS and won 5 times. The Cubs offense just couldn't
muster enough offense against the Cardinals starter who went the distance and allowed single runs in
the first, seventh and ninth innings. The Cards scored once in the 4th, and 5th and 5 times in
the 6th to make the game 7-1. The Cardinals then scored 2 in the 7th to make it 9-1 after 6 and a half.
The Cubs collected 7 hits, 2 doubles by Glenn Legault, 1 double by Andy Schultz and singles by
Eddie Murray, Earl Carpenter, Andy Luckhardt and Rich Schwarz. The Cubs played solid defense commiting
just 1 error and turning a nice 1-6-3 double play (Tom Barnes to Earl to Brad Adams). Glenn also made
a great play at third diving to his left to snare a hot one hopper and throw out the runner to start the
9th inning. Tom Barnes started and went 6 innings. The 6th was the key inning as 5 runs came home to
open up a close 2-1 game. Andy Schultz pitched the last three innings allowing 2 runs.
