Box Score

This was a great way for the Cubs to start the second half. They had a great game from the pitchers, played cleanly on defense and had clutch hits to drive in runs.

Tom Barnes went the first 7 innings allowing just 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 6. 3 of Tom's last 4 batters struck out. Tom's finest moment came in the top of the 4th when the Mariners loaded the bases with one out. Tom struck out the next two batters to allow the Cubs to maintain the 5-0 lead. Tom also pitched around an error in centerfield which went for a double to score the only run off him. The double left Tom with runners at second and third with one out and Tom induced two groundballs to Dennis at short and no runs scored. Tom also picked off a runner at second in the fifth inning. Andy Schultz finished the last two innings allowing 1 run and striking out 3 batters.

The Cubs played a pretty solid game defensively with 2 outfield assists, including a critical play in the first by Mark Grogan to gun out a runner at the plate on a single to left. The Mariners had put runners on first and second with two outs when the batter hit a single left that Mark charged and threw a one hop bullet to the plate getting the runner by 20 feet. The Cubs also got a a double play when a flair to right center was caught by Rich Schwarz who then flipped to Brad Adams at first to catch the runner way off first. Tim Shaver caught the final four innings and did a nice job.

On offense, the Cubs used 10 hits and 13 walks to score 11 runs. 7 of the 13 walks ended up scoring runs for the Cubs! The biggest hit came from Andy Schultz who delivered a 2 out, 2 strike, 2 run single in the second inning to push the Cubs lead to 3-0. Paul Sonnett was 3-3 including a bases loaded single and 3 RBIs. Glenn Legault ran his amazing streak to 10 consecutive at bats reaching base with 4 hits, 5 walks and a HBP. If you take out the sac fly from 3 games ago, the streak is 12 straight at bats. Glenn and Peter DiNatale scored 3 runs each in this one. Brad Adams has walked in 6 of his last 8 at bats over the last two games. Earl Carpenter smashed a 2 out run scoring triple in the third down the line in right field.
