The Cubs lost 5-1 to the Phillies at Medway High School. After putting on a 22 run blitz last weekend, the Cubs managed just 5 hits and 1 run this week. Andy Schultz took the loss, but pitched pretty well allowing 4 runs in 4 innings. Only two of the runs were earned and with some better defense, Andy could have had a better line. Chris Greig shut the Phillies down, allowing just 1 unearned run. Earl Carpenter pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with 2 Ks. Andy Luckhardt drove in the only run with a smoked double scoring Earl Carpenter who had walked to start the 5th inning.

Despite some shaky defense (5 errors leading directly to 3 Phillies runs) there were some nice plays turned in today. Dennis Fontecchio had a good day at short. In the eighth, there was a hard shot in the shortstop hole, Dennis got to the ball and threw a bullet a bit low to first. Brad Adams made the nice scoop to end the inning. Paul Sonnett threw out a Phillies runner trying to get to second on an overthrow at the plate. Paul threw a strike from the backstop and Tim Shaver made a great scoop and tag to cut the runner down. Tim Shaver also made a nice catch going back on a soft line drive in short right field.

Andy Luckhardt drove in the only run with a smoked double scoring Earl Carpenter who had walked to start the 5th inning. The 5 Cubs hits were from Dennis Fontecchio, Paul Sonnett, Andy Luckhardt, Brad Adams and Chris Greig.
