The Cubs attempt for their second League Championship fell just short, losing in the first game 3 of the
League Championships in the history of the league. This was a 1-1 game going into the bottom of the
7th when the Orioles erupted for 6 runs. The Cubs continued to battle, but could only pick up one
run in the top of the ninth for the final 7-2 score. Tom Barnes started and was fantastic for the
first six innings allowing just 1 run. He also made a terrific play on a slow roller to his left in the
second inning. He dove for the ball and got it barehanded, then while laying on his back he threw a
slow strike to first. Brad Adams stretched as far as possible to help get the out. Andy Schultz made
perhaps the defensive play of the game in right field in the third inning. The score was 0-0 and the
Orioles had the go ahead run in scoring position with two outs. A sinking liner down the right field
line looked to be a sure hit, but Andy got a great jump and dove head first to snare the ball with his
barehand! Peter DiNatale also made terrific plays at second base on consecutive batters to end the
sixth inning. Offensively, the Cubs were led by Dennis Fontecchio's 2 hits and run scored. Earl
Carpenter also collected a hit and a run scored. Paul Sonnett doubled home Dennis in the 4th to give
the Cubs a 1-0 lead. Peter DiNatale was 1-1 with an RBI single and 2 HBPs.
