The Cubs won game 2 of the double header against the Phillies 7-2 to sweep the double header and
extend the team record winning streak to 12 games. The sweep enabled the Cubs to clinch first
place in the National League. With the win, the Cubs finished their National League regular
season schedule with a perfect 8-0 record for the first time in team history!
This game was not nearly as tense as game 1, but it was still a close game. The Cubs scored two runs in the top of
the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. With one out, 5 straight Cubbie batters reached to score the two runs. Brad
Adams started it with a single and then Peter DiNatale and Andy Luckhardt followed with walks to load the bases.
Tim Shaver was hit by a pitch to drive in his 4th run of the day! Will Lessard followed with a hit to right that
would have been deep enough for a sac fly but the right fielder dropped the ball for an error.
It remained 2-0 until the 5th inning when the Cubs scored 4 times to take a 6-0 lead. Rich Schwarz drew a one out
walk. After a stolen base, Glenn Legault singled in a run. After another steal, Dennis Fontecchio singled in
Glenn. Eddie Murray doubled putting runners at second and third. Earl Carpenter's third sac fly of the day brought
home the third run of the inning and Brad Adams hit a two out RBI single to close out the inning. After the Phillies
scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Cubs extended their lead to 7-1 on an RBI single by Dennis Fontecchio.
Andy Luckhardt pitched the first two innings, allowing no runs on 1 hit and 1 walk. Earl Carpenter pitched the next
4 innings allowing just 1 run. Earl earned the victory. Earl struck out three and didn't walk anyone. Mark Grogan
pitched the final inning allowing an unearned run on no hits or walks.
Tim Shaver caught the final 5 innings of the game and did a great job. Peter DiNatale made a terrific sprawling
play at second base on a slow roller to get an out at first base. Eddie Murray made a huge catch in right field
on a screaming line drive over his head. Andy Schultz also made a nice catch in right on a hot smash from the same
batter later in the game.
