This was a very good baseball game with several lead changes and tense moments. The Cubs trailed 2-0 and then put up
4 runs in the bottom of the second to lead 4-2. Peter DiNatale and Andy Luckhardt led off with walks and both scored
on a triple by Tom Shaver. Tim scored on a Will Lessard double and Will scored on a one out single by Chris Greig.
In the top of the third, The Phillies rallied for 5 runs to take a 7-4 lead. The Cubs scored 1 in the bottom of the
third on a Dennis Fontecchio single, Eddie Murray single and Earl Carpenter sac fly. The Cubs regained the lead in the
bottom of the fourth by scoring three times, again with a triple playing a key role. With one out, Andy Luckhardt drew
the second of his 4 consecutive walks, stole second and scored on a Tim Shaver single. Will Lessard followed with a
single. After a fielders choice, Chris Greig hit a crucial two run two out triple to give the Cubs an 8-7 lead.
The fifth inning ended up being the turning point of the game. With the Cubs holding the 8-7 lead, the Phillies loaded
the bases off Andy Schultz on two singles and a HBP with no outs. Andy went on to strike out the next three batters to
keep the Cubs lead in tact. It was a truly amazing piece of pitching by Andy. The Cubs went on to score 2 runs in the
bottom of the 5th to take a 10-7 lead. Rich Schwarz lead off with a walk and after an out Dennis Fontecchio singled.
Eddie Murray drove in Rich with a double. Earl Carpenter drove in Dennis with a sacrifice fly, two of his three on
the day.
The Phillies made it interesting with two runs in the top of the sixth to make the score 10-9. In the top of the 7th,
the Phillies got the leadoff man on with a single. On a failed bunt attempt, catcher Earl Carpenter picked the runner
off first with Chris Greig executing the run down perfectly and Tim Shaver applying the tag at second base. After
the next batter walked, Andy Schultz got the last two outs to end the game.
Andy Schultz pitched the final 5 innings of the game allowing just two runs to pick up the win. One other great
defensive play besides the last inning pickoff, was turned in by Andy Luckhardt in center field. In the third inning
with the Cubs already trailing 6-4 and runners on second and third, Andy Luckhardt charged a soft liner in shallow
center and made the catch while sliding on his knees.
