The Cubs beat the Brewers 17-9 on July 27th to extend their team record winning streak to 8 games! You'd never believe how close a game this was based on the final score. The Brewers scored 3 in the first and had a 5-3 lead after 5 innings and a 5-4 lead after 6 innings. The Cubs took their first lead of the game in the 7th when Peter DiNatale hit a 2 run bases loaded single. Andy Luckhardt followed with the first of his two sac flies to make it 7-5 Cubs. In the 8th, Glenn Legault smashed a two out three run homer to left to push the lead to 10-5. The Cubs blew it open with a 7 run ninth (the 5th time the Cubs have scored at least 7 runs in an inning in just 9 games!). The Cubs used 7 singles, a double and 2 HBPs in the ninth for the 7 runs. The Brewers closed the game scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the ninth for the final score. Tom Barnes went the first 6 innings allowing 5 runs just the 3 in the first inning were earned. Chris Greig was solid pitching a scoreless 7th and 8th which allowed the Cubs to come back. Tom Barnes and Eddie Murray collected three hits each to pace the 21 hit attack. Every Cub either scored or drove in a run!

Box Score

The Cubs beat a pesky Brewers club looking for the upset with a 17-9 win. The Cubs were trailing 5-4 after 6 but managed to pull away over the last three innings. This is now the Cubs first ever 8 game winning streak.

Tom Barnes started and had a rough first inning. Tom allowed three runs 4 hits, three for extra bases. After that start though, Tom was great and allowed the Cubs to mount a comeback. Tom allowed just 2 unearned runs over the next 5 innings. Tom picked up 5 Ks in his 6 innings of work including striking out the side in the 5th inning. Tom improved to 4-0 on the season. Chris Grieg pitched the final three innings to pick up the first save for the team this season. Chris was big in the 7th and 8th allowing no runs while the Cubs went from a 5-4 deficit to a 17-5 lead.

The Cubs had a few sloppy moments in the field but played a good game overall. There were two double plays thurned. A 6-4-3 in the second and 4-3 in the 8th. Chris Greig made a great play to end the 7th on a shot back to the mound that he snared. At the time, the Cubs had a 2 run lead and the Brewers had runners at first and second.

On offense, there were several stars in the this one as you might expect when a team scores 17 runs. Every Cubs player either drove in a run or scored in this one, so it was a typical Cubs team effort. With the 7 run 9th, the Cubs also managed to have their 5th inning with 7 or more runs scored in just 9 games! Out of the 21 hits the Cubs had, there were 2 clutch hits that stand out. Peter DiNatale had a 2 run bases loaded single in the 7th to give the Cubs their first lead of the game at 6-5. In the 8th, Glenn Legault hit a two out three run homer to make teh Cubs lead 10-5. Eddie Murray and Tom Barnes both had three hit days. Tom managed to score 4 runs on the day! Will Lessard scored three times. Peter DiNatale drove in 4 and Glenn drove in 3. I have no proff for this, but I believe the Cubs set a team record by hitting three sacrifice flies in the game. Peter DiNatale had 1 and Andy Luckhardt had 2.
