The Cubs rode another huge offensive inning to the victory over the Cardinals. The Cards scored twice in the top of the 6th to make the score 4-3 and then the Cubs pushed across 7 runs in the bottom of the 6th for an impressive 11-3 win. Tom Barnes was the starter and allowed 3 runs over 5 2/3rds. Tom was very sharp in this one, but a bad call in the second led to a run and the Cards pushed 2 more across in the 6th after it looked like Tom had out 3 on a strikeout. Offensively, Eddie Murray was 3-4 with 3 runs scored and two RBIs. Will Lessard capped the 7 run sixth with a bases loaded double. There were several great defensive plays in this one as Tim Shaver made a great play at second base in the first, Dennis Fontecchio made a great play in the hole at short in the 3rd and Brad Adams made a diving play at first to end the fourth.

Box Score

The Cubs picked up their team record 7th straight regular season win with a 11-3 victory over the Cardinals. During their 7 game winning streak, the Cubs have beaten their opponents 85-17!

This has been one amazing start to a season for the Cubs in 2003. They are off to a 7-1 start and in 6 of those wins, there has been at least one big inning. Check out these innings so far in 2003 for the Cubs:

Date Opposing Team # of Runs Inning
5/4 Cardinals 5 3rd
5/18 Yankees 8 4th
6/15 Brewers 7 2nd
6/15 Brewers 5 5th
6/29 Braves 6 7th
7/13 Yankees 7 5th
7/20 Cardinals 7 6th

This game marked the third time in 8 games that the Cubs have scored 7 runs in an inning!

The pitching was once again great for the Cubs. Tom Barnes started and allowed 3 runs on 7 hits in 5 2/3rds. Tom actually could have had a shutout, but some bad luck prevented that. Tom also elavated his game at a couple key moments. He forced the Cards to leave runners stranded at first and third in the fourth and struck out the Cardinals best hitter with the bases loaded in the fifth. Andy Luckhardt was dominant in his 2 1/3rd innings. Andy got the last out of the 6th on a K with runners at first and second. The Cubs were leading by 1 run at the time. Andy went on to finish the 7th and 8th innings picking up 2 more Ks and allowing 1 hit. Andy Schultz pitched a scoreless ninth.

Defensively, the Cubs made plays all over the infield. Tim Shaver made a great play up the middle on the second batter of the game. A grounder looked like a sure hit but Tim went to his right, gained his balance and fired to first to get the out on a bang bang play. In the third, Dennis Fontecchio snared a shot in the shortstop hole and threw out the runner (the same guy Tim robbed!). Paul Sonnett threw out two Cardinals runners at first base (3rd and 5th innings) from his catcher position. Perhaps the best play of all was Brad Adams diving snare of a grounder at first base to end the fourth inning. Brad had to dive to his right, then get up and beat the Cardinal runner to first base.

The Cubs got contributions all over the lineup today. Eddie Murray was 3-4 with a double, 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Glenn Legault scored twice and had a single and walk. Tom Barnes had a huge two out RBI hit in the fourth inning that extended the Cubs lead to 4-1. Tim Shaver chipped in with a single and a walk. The loudest hit of the day came from Will Lessard. Will came up with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the sixth. The Cubs had already scored 3 two out runs in the inning. Will hit a bomb over the left fielder's head for a bases clearing double!
