The Cubs beat the Red Sox 6-0 in a very close game. The score was 2-0 after 4 innings. The story of this game was Tom Barnes who went the distance for the shutout allowing just 1 hit. Tom had 6 Ks and 2 walks, his 3rd pickoff in two games and he didn't allow a single Red Sox to reach third base. This was Tom's second consecutive 7 inning 1 hitter! On offense, the Cubs were led by Paul Sonnett's 2-2 day and Eddie Murray's 2-3 with an RBI and run. Dennis Fontecchio scored twice and smacked his team leading 10th hit. Mark Grogan had a key sac fly to deep center in the fifth for some breathing room.

Defensively, there weren't many great plays, but Bruce Diaz made several nice plays at third. Brad Adams blocked one low throw and picked it up before the runner reached first for a big out. The one Red Sox batter to reach by hit was immediately erased on a nice 1-6-3 double play, Tom to Dennis Fontecchio to Chris Greig.

Eddie reaxhed second on a single by Paul and then Eddie ended up scoring after a passed ball and a wild pitch. The Cubs scored three in the fifth after Earl Carpenter and Tom led off with walks. Earl ended up scoring on a wild pitch. Tim Shaver pinch ran for Tom and reached third on a Bruce Diaz single. Tim scored on Mark Grogan's sac fly and Bruce scored on a wild pitch.
