Box Score

The Cubs 2003 season started with a road game against the Indians on April 27. It was a well played game for the Cubs until the a little sloppyness in the eighth inning led to 5 Indians runs. The Cubs entered the 8th leading 3-2. Earl Carpenter pitched 6 great innings allowing just 1 run on three hits. Bruce Diaz and Brad Adams pitched the final two innings.

The defense was surprising solid early in the game with the amount of preseason work the Cubs were able to get in this tough winter. Eddie Murray made two sparkling diving catches in right field. Bruce Diaz snared a liner at second and started an inning ending double play.

On offense, the Cubs banged out 12 hits and scored single runs in the first, second and fifth innings. The Cubs did not go down 1-2-3 in any inning and were just a break away from running away with the game early. Paul Sonnett led the offense with a 3-3 day, a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Glenn Legault, making his Cubbie debut was 2-3 with a run scored and a couple stolen bases. Dennis Fontecchio and Brad Adams had 2 hits a piece. Bruce Diaz' first Cubbie at bat was a two out RBI single in the second inning.
