The Cubs won their fourth game in the last five with a statement game over the first place Braves. The Cubs won 6-3, and as is almost always the case, the game was won with pitching, defense and timely hitting. On the pitching end, Andy Schultz tossed arguably the best game of his 7 year Cub career. It was a complete game with 1 earned run and just 5 hits. On defense, there was another two double plays turned, the last one ended the game. A hard one hopper to Bruce Sher at third to second baseman Peter DiNatale who threw a bullet to Brad Adams at first for the game ender. On offense, the Cubs were led by Brad Adams with a 2-2 effort including a clutch two out single in the second inning to drive in the second Cubs run. The Cubs extended the lead to 5-0 with back to back two out RBI doubles by Rich Schwarz and Dan Gould. The Cubs got a key insurance run in the top of the ninth when Brad Adams was hit by a pitch and stole second to be driven in by a smash single down the left field line by Andy Luckhardt. Dennis Fontecchio drove in the first run of the game with a single and Mike Cox started the seventh inning rally with a single.
