Wow, what a game! I'm still trying to recover from the wild ride on Sunday. The Cubs, who
were 10-0 lifetime against the Brewers, outscored the Brewers 15-14 for their first win
of the 2002 season. Here is how it went down inning by inning:
1 - Cubs score three runs to take 3-0 lead
2 - Cubs score again to increase lead to 4-0
3 - Brewers score 5 runs, all after 2 are out to take temporary 5-4 lead. Cubs score 5
in bottom of inning to regain 4 run lead at 9-5
4 - Cubs extend lead with a run to 10-5
5 - Brewers score another 2 out run to make it a 10-6 game. Cubs score 2 2 out runs in
bottom half of inning to increase lead to 12-6.
6 - Brewers score 4 runs and Cubs don't score to make this a 12-10 game!
7 - Brewers continue comeback and tie the game with 2 runs. Cubs score 3 huge runs, two
of which come after two are out for a 15-12 lead.
8 - Brewers score two more runs with another 2 out rally. Tying run thrown out at third
to end the inning. Cubs don't score, but lead 15-14.
9 - Brewers go down 1-2-3 for the first time in the game allowing the Cubs to win 15-14!
Here are the details of how the Cubs runs were scored:
1 - With 1 out Tim Shaver and Eddie Murray smash singles to put runners on first and second.
Paul Sonnett follows with a double to right center to score both runners. After another
out, Tom Barnes rips a single to left scoring Paul for the 3-0 lead.
2 - After three consecutive walks and then a strikeout, Rich Schwarz singles to left to
drive in a run for the 4-0 lead. A runner is thrown out at the plate on the Schwarz single.
3 - This was a key inning. The Cubs had just fallen behind 5-4 but put up a huge 5 run
rally. Bruce Sher led off with a single to left. With one out and Bruce on second with a
steal, Eddie Murray singled Bruce to third base. Paul Sonnett walked to load the bases.
Earl Carpenter fell behind in the count but worked a 3-2 walk to tie the game at 5. After
the second out, Matt Finnegan walked in the go ahead run. A passed ball scored the third
run of the inning and then Brad Adams and Chris Greig followed with run scoring singles.
4 - A walk and a passed ball put Chris Dionne in scoring position to lead off the fourth.
Andy Schultz followed with an RBI single to make the score 10-5 Cubs.
5 - Tom Barnes stroked a one out single and advanced to second on the second out of the
inning. Brad Adams followed with his second consecutive 2 out run scoring single. Brad
came around to score on a booming double to left center by Chris Greig.
6 - No runs scored. Newcomer, Mike Cox got his first hit of the season though.
7 - This was another critical inning. In the top half, the Brewers had just tied the game
at 12. The resilient Cubs came right back with a three spot that ended up being the
difference. Tim Shaver and Eddie Murray amoked back to back singles again to lead off
the inning. Earl Carpenter followed with a line drive single to score Tim. After two outs,
Chris Greig delivered his third consecutive two out run scoring hit to score the second run.
Rookie Brian Egan got his first hit of the season, an RBI single that scored the game winning
run!
8 - The Cubs had their first 1-2-3 inning of the game.
On defense, there was a tremendous 6-4-3 double play from Bruce Sher to Chris Dionne to Brad Adams.
Chris Greig pitched the ninth, the only 1-2-3 inning of the game for Cubs pitchers, and earned the
save. Andy Schultz pitched the 7th and 8th innings and picked up the victory.
