The Cubs lost the 2002 season opener 3-2 to the Indians at Bauks Field in Marlboro.
It was a very entertaining game as the Cubs fell behind 3-0 early and kept fighting
only to come up a run short. Earl Carpenter and Chris Greig pitched well and Tim Shaver
was the offensive star with a 2-4 day at the plate and 1 RBI.
After a rainout on 4/28/02, the Cubs 2002 season started with a road game against the
Indians on May 5. The Cubs found themselves in a 3-0 hole after five innings but managed
to score single runs in the 6th and 7th innings to make it close. It was a well played
game for the first game of the season. The Cubs stranded several runners including a man
at third in the first and the potential tying run was in scoring position in the 7th, 8th
and 9th innings.
Earl Carpenter started
and pitched very well allowing 3 runs, one earned and just 4 hits in five innings. Chris
Greig pitched the final three innings without allowing a run.
The defense was sloppy early
but fantastic late turning three double plays, including a 1-2-3 with no outs and the bases
loaded, a 5-4-3 (Matt Finnegan to Bruce Sher who made the throw while being upended by the
runner), and a strike 'em out throw 'em out double play to end the eighth.
Earl Carpenter
doubled and scored the first run on a throwing error and Tim Shaver drove in Peter DiNatale
with the second run. Tim was the offensive star for the Cubs with a 2-4 day that could have
been a 3-4 if a liner hadn't gone straight to short.
