The Cubs were defeated by the Phillies 16-3. The Cubs pitching allowed 11 walks and 6 of those runners
ended up scoring. The defense didn't make any outstanding plays other than Dennis Fontecchio fielding a
wicked one hopper to his left. On the play, there was a runner at third. Dennis whirled around and threw
home forcing the runner to stay at third. The runner would have been nailed if he tried for home.
The offense was paced by Eddie Murray (4-5 2 doubles 2 RBIs) and Bruce Sher (3-5 1 RBI). The Cubs managed
to bat exactly 5 batters in every inning from the third to the eighth! The key run producing hit just
couldn't be delivered. Tim Shaver also collected 2 hits on the day.
This is a game to forget about and move on from. During the playoffs we'll have to be sure not to score
three runs in the top of the first and we should be OK. The loss left the Cubs in third place in the
National League, so it will probably be the road team in all playoff series it plays.
