The Cubs lost a tough game to the Braves 14-9. A win could have just about clinched second place
in the National League and a first round home playoff game. However, an 8 run Brave first inning
was too much for the Cubs to overcome. Andy Schultz went the distance in a gutsy performance and
Eddie Murray led the offense with 4 hits.
The Cubs again had many players away on vacation but still managed to give the
Braves a tough game in losing 14-9. The Cubs started off the game in tremendous
fashion scoring three times in the top of the first inning. A single by Bruce
Sher and a double by Eddie Murray set up a two run triple by Paul Sonnett. Tim
Shaver followed with a run scoring single. However, the Braves answered the call
with eight runs in the bottom of the first using several infield hits and a steal
of home plate on a controversial call.
The Cubs closed the gap to three runs three times only to have the Braves extend the lead
back to 5 runs. Andy Schultz went the distance and threw a ton of pitches. With
a little more support and luck in the first inning this game could have turned out
differently. Andy has now pitched in 10 of the games this season and 43 innings, by
far the workhouse on the Cubs staff this season.
Eddie Murray collected 4 hits on the day to take the team lead in batting average.
Bruce Sher continues to have an amazing rookie year with a batting average over .500.
Tim Shaver collected two hits including a double. Bill Fistori, playing just his
second game as a Cub, had another great outing collecting 2 more hits. Bill has been
a great late season addition to the squad!
