Sun 06/24/2001 Game 2
Tom Barnes pitched a masterful 1 hit shutout to give the Cubs their first win in
June! Andy Schultz had a big day driving in the first run and making 4 catches
in right field. The defense was outstanding as three double plays were turned. The
Cubs ended up pitching 13 consecutive scoreless innings against the Orioles in the
double header! Another amazing feat is that teh Cubs only stuck out once the
entire game!

Game two was a battle of the lefties. Tom Barnes of the Cubs took to
the mound to face the Orioles and their lefty Rob Shaw. Barnes had all
his pitches working for him. Except for a handful of walks to each of
the Galvani brothers, Tom was on his game. Barnes was the story in this
one, giving up just one hit over seven innings to record the shutout victory.
After being shutout for nine innings on the day, the Cubs bats finally came to
life in the 3rd inning. Tim Shaver led off with a single to the gap in left center.
Paul Sonnett walked and then Mark Kujawski laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to
move runners to second and third. Andy Schultz delivered a clutch two strike
line drive single between short and third to score Tim. The Cubs were able to
get insurance runs in the 5th inning when Kujawski hit a ball to center that must
have been knuckling as it appeared to do everything but go into O's centerfielder
Carlos Galvani's glove. After an out, Dan Gould hit a double down the first base
line. Mark stopped at third but alertly went home when the throw into second
got away from the shortstop. Rich Schwarz then singled Dan in for the third
and final run of the game.
The Cubs made some terrific plays throughout the game to preserve the
lead and the shutout. Mark Kujawski, Tim Shaver and Eddie Murray
combined a 5-4-3 double play to deflate the O's in the 6th inning. Andy
Schultz, who was in rightfield, snagged 3 fly balls to record all three outs in the
5th. A huge play came in the first inning when the first two Orioles batters
reached and it looked like the Cubs might have another tough first inning.
Tom Barnes got the third batter to flyout to center field. Brendan Doyle followed
with a ground ball to short. Dennis Fontecchio threw to Tim at second to get the
force but the relay to first was not in time to turn the standard double play. However,
Tom Galvani from the Orioles tried to score from second on the play. Eddie Murray
fired a bullet to Paul Sonnett behind the plate who tagged Galvani out to end the
inning with a strange but beautiful double play!
