The six game winning streak ended with a 9-2 loss to the Orioles.
The Cubs played without many of their big offensive guns and their two
starting catchers.
The Cubs awesome 6 game winning streak ended with a 9-2 loss to the Orioles. The Cubs
showed a lot of heart playing without several key players. Andy Schultz caught the
entire game in an emergency role. Andy filled an admirably. This was the first non-Sunday
game and first night game ever played by the Cubs franchise!
Tom Barnes pitched the first 5 innings and picked up his first loss in 7 decisions.
Tom received little support early. Through three innings Tom had allowed 5 runs on
just 2 hits. Dan Gould pitched well again when he came in to pitch the sixth inning despite
having a sore arm.
The Cubs played fairly solid defense. There was a sweet double play turned in the first
inning. Second baseman Tim Shaver started the double play with a toss to Dennis Fontecchio
who threw a strike to John Sudkin at first base. John Sudkin made a nice catch on a line
drive in left field in the sixth inning.
The Orioles pitching limited the Cubs to just 4 hits. Two of the hits were by
Dennis Fontecchio. Tim Shaver had a great two strike single to right. Dan Gould
led off the seventh with a single and he scored the second Cubs run. John Sudkin
brought in Dan with a ground out. Tom Barnes
reached first on an error and advanced to third on two wild pitches before scoring
on a ground out by Rich Schwarz.
