Things keep getting better for the Cubs each week! The Cubs winning streak
reached 6 games with a convincing 20-8 win over the Indians. The streak
appeared to be in jeopardy when the Cubs gave up 5 runs in the top of the
fourth to fall behind 6-0. This amazing team battled back to score 6 runs
in the bottom of the fourth and another 5 in the bottom of the fifth to take
an 11-6 lead after 5! A big round of thanks to Pete DiNatale who made a
surprise appearance and caught the entire game!
Tom Barnes improved his record to 6-0 with seven solid innings. He allowed
7 runs, but only 3 were earned. He allowed just three hits and struck out
5 Indians. Tom continues to pick a massive number of runners off. He only
got credit for 1 pickoff in this game, but he actually had 3 runners picked.
Dan Gould did a nice job pitching the last two innings giving up
just 1 run that wasn't his fault. Dan seems to be getting better with each
outing.
Defensively, the Cubs seemed a bit tired for the first few innings but picked
it up later. There weren't too many spectacular plays but the big plays were
made. John Sudkin made a nice play at first snaring a hard grounder down the
line. Tom Jette has been good at third the past couple weeks. Dennis
Fontecchio has been doing a great job at short making all the plays.
The offense showed up for the last six innings. The Cubs scored run in bunches
with 6 in the 4th, 5 in the fifth, 3 in the 7th and 6 more in the 8th. The 4th
inning was the turning point of the game. The Cubs were trailing 6-0 entering
the inning and left the inning tied. For the second time in three weeks Tom
Jette delivered a clutch two out two run hit to right. His hit brought home
Rich Schwarz who had doubled to drive in 2 and Mark Grogan. Pete DiNatale
and Andy Luckhardt followed with run producing singles to tie the game. The fifth
inning started with a single and stolen base by Dan Gould, and an RBI single
by Dennis Fontecchio. After a line drive double play cleared the bases, the Cubs
managed to score 4 more runs. Eddie Murray started it off with a triple, Rich
Schwarz followed with a double and then an RBI single for Tom Barnes, a walk
to Mark Grogan and a key two run double by Tim Shaver. Again in the 7th,
the Cubs scored their three runs after two outs. In total, the Cubs scored 17
of their 20 runs after there were 2 outs! All 12 Cub players had at least
one hit. Package had a good day at the plate going 2-4 with a booming double.
