Box Score

The Cubs won their third straight game with a 7-5 victory over the Brewers. As with any good team, the Cubs are getting strong performances from different players each week. Chris Greig pitched all seven innings to record his first victory of the season. Through six innings Chris had only given up 3 hits and 1 earned run!! The offense was paced by John Sudkin, Tom Barnes and Mark Grogan, while last week Earl Carpenter and Eddie Murray had big games.

Defensively, the Cubs were fairly solid. The play of the game was turned in by catcher Earl Carpenter who gunned down a potential base stealer at third base. The runner got a great jump but Earl threw a perfectly placed bullet to third that Dan Gould caught and tagged out the runner without moving his glove. Chris picked off a runner at first so far that firstbaseman Tom Barnes had to wait for the runner to get to first to apply the tag. The versatile Dan Gould played his first game at third this season and had a great game with seven assists! Dan also had 2 putouts, pretty busy day for a third baseman!

Offensively, John Sudkin had a great day. He was 3-3 with an RBI in each at bat. This performance raised his season average to .500! Two of the hits were doubles and two were with two outs. The Cubs scored 4 runs with two outs in this one. The biggest two ended up scoring in the bottom of the sixth. With 2 outs and no one on, Tom Barnes singled and was driven in by a Sudkin double. Matt Corkum followed with an infield single. Then walks to Tim Shaver and Chris Greig drove in the last run. With the Brewers scoring 3 in the top of the seventh those two runs ended up being the difference in the game. Tom Barnes was 1-1 with a sac fly, a walk and 2 runs scored. Mark Grogan raised his team leading batting average to .563 with a single and HBP. Eddie Murray was 0-3 but absolutely crushed the ball twice only to have outfielders come up with good catches. Tony Leary had a nice double deep down the left field line in the fifth inning.
