The Cubs lost a close game 10-8 to in the first game of a double header with the Yankees. The Cubs
surrendered a 8-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth and left the bases loaded in the first, second and
fourth innings.
This was such a tough game to lose. The Cubs lead for the entire game and then
fell apart in the bottom of the sixth allowing 5 runs. The Cubs stranded a ton
of runners in this one. They left the bases loaded in the first, second and
fourth innings. The best defensive play of the game was a 6-4-3 double play to end
the fifth inning. On the unusual side, Tom managed to pick off 3, yes 3, runners
in this game. One off first and 2 off second. The defense was stronger than it
has been for a few weeks but there was still some
sloppyness in the field. Tom Barnes and Earl Carpenter pitched pretty well.
This was a tough weekend to get players, we started game 1 with 10 players, 1
of which was a friend of Tom Barnes. Thanks Gary McAndrews for playing and
catching to give Chris Greig and Earl a break. It turned out that Tom and
Gary had to leave after the fifth inning. Fortunately another friend of Tom and
Mark Grogan's, Dave Wakstein, showed up in time so we could finish the first
game with 9 players!
Offensively, some good things happened for the Cubs. Matt Corkum had a huge
2 out bases loaded double in the first and a two out run scoring single in the
second inning! Not bad, two at bats and four two out RBIs! Tim Shaver was
2-5 with a bomb of a double and he was robbed of another double in his last at
bat on a great play by the right fielder. Tom Barnes continues to swing a hot
bat. He was 2-3 with a RBI and a run scored. His only "out" was a reach on error
and he was hit by a pitch. Tom reached base in all 4 at bats. Eddie Murray
and Earl both scored twice. Chris Greig was 1-1 with 1 RBI and 3 walks!
