The Cubs won the second game of the double header 9-7 to earn a split. The Cubs
rallied from a 6-3 deficit. Tom Barnes went the distance in this game.
This was a great win for the Cubs! All 11 Cubbies either drove in a run or
scored a run! Tom Barnes pitched the entire game. Including the three innings
pitched from the first game, Tom pitched 10 innings on the day! Only 3 of
the 7 Red Sox runs were earned. Tom got stronger as the day went on, he gave
up just 1 hit over the last three innings.
The Cubs defensive woes continued in this game as 6 errors were made. Yikes....
One of the few bright spots was gunning out a runner at the plate in the first
inning. With a runner at second, a line drive to right center dropped past the
dive of Rich Schwarz. The runner thought the ball might be caught so he tagged up.
Schwarz threw the ball to Earl at short who threw a strike to Chris Greig who
applied the tag for the out at the plate!
Offensively, the Cubs entire lineup enjoyed the second game. Dennis Fontecchio
and Matt Corkum batted first and second and each had 2 hits. Matt scored
another two runs for a total of 4 in the double header! Eddie Murray drove
in two with a double over the third base bag. Earl Carpenter had two hits and
a run scored. One of Earl's hits was a bizarre ground ball that was foul and
then took a wicked hop back into fair territory just before going over the third
base bag! A key moment of the game came in the fourth inning. The Cubs were
trailing 6-3 after three. With two outs and no runners on base Chris Greig
singled, Tom Jette doubled, Schwarz singled and Andy Schultz drove in two with
a clutch single to tie the game at 6. That seemed to give the Cubs a huge lift
and they went on to the 9-7 victory. The following inning the Cubs scored
two runs on singles by Matt and Earl, a passed ball scored Matt and a Tom Barnes
fielders choice scored Earl with the eventual game winner. The final run was
scored by Package who walked and then stole a couple bases.
