The Cubs put up a good fight in this one, but fell short to a strong Red Sox
club 7-4. The Cubs trailed 6-4 after three innings and just couldn't get the
key hit to drive in any runs. The Cubs managed just 4 hits but there were a
ton of runners on base aided by 5 Red Sox errors, 2 HBPs and 2 walks. Matt
Corkum scored twice and had a hit. Earl Carpenter had a hit, 1 run and 1 RBI.
The other two singles belonged to Chris Greig and Dennis Fontecchio.
Earl Carpenter pitched the first four innings of this one and just didn't get
much defensive support. Tom Barnes pitched the last three innings allowing
just 1 unearned run. Read the game 2 recap for more info on Tom's long day
of pitching!
Defensively, the Cubs played another sloppy game. The Cubs defense has not
been a strong point so far this season, although some nice plays are being turned
in each week. In this game, Earl Carpenter started a terrific double play from
the mound. The batter hit a high chopper over the mound that looked like it would
settle in front of the shortstop for an infield hit. Earl quickly hopped from
the mound and snagged the ball then fired a strike to second where Eddie Murray
tagged the bag and threw to first to complete a great double play. Tom Jette
also made a very nice play at second grabbing a hot one hopper and making the play
to first.
