It's good to be a Cub!! Those poor, poor Cardinals are no longer playing baseball in 1999. The Cubs crushed the Cardinals 13-3 to continue their march towards a repeat League Championship. There were some very spooky similarities in this game to last year's first round game against the Phillies. Here are those odd coincidences:

Final score:14-413-3
1st inning:Cubs score 5 runsCubs score 7 runs
8th inning:Phils score 3 after trailing 14-1 Cards score 2 after trailing 13-1

The Cubs played outstanding baseball to take this one easily. The pitching was very solid as Tom Barnes went 5 innings allowing just 2 hits and 1 unearned run. Bryon Withers came on to pitch the 6th and 7th without allowing a hit or a run. Andy Schultz and Dan Gould mopped up the last two innings very effectively.

Defensively, The Cubs stepped it up a notch. There were just two errors committed and both were on tough plays. Brian Donnelly made a great diving catch in left field on a sinking line drive. Bill Keville turned a pretty double play fielding a grounder, stepping on second, and then firing a strike to a stretching John Sudkin. Pete DiNatale solidified the infield with his presence and had 5 assists as Tom had his ground ball game going well.

Offensively, the Cubs were aided by 10 walks. The first seven batters of the first inning walked, yes that is no typo!! The Cardinals best pitcher didn't show up until the Cubs were batting their tenth batter of the first inning. Even with Murphy pitching 8 innings, the Cubs managed 15 hits. Pete DiNatale, Bryon Withers, John Sudkin, Rich Schwarz, Brian Donnelly and Andy Schultz all had two hits. Brian Donnelly had the only extra base hit, a two out, two run double in the sixth. Dan Gould scored 3 runs and he continues to produce from the leadoff spot.
