The Cubs earned a split of the double header with a 3 to zip blanking
of the Cardinals. Andy Luckhardt was the pitching star with a complete
game 6 hit shutout. Andy has shut out the Cardinals twice this season.
Andy improved his already incredible strikeout to walk ratio by fanning
8 and walking none. On the season Andy has now struck out 68 and walked
just 9.
The Cubs played better defense in the second game.
Offensively, it was a good day for the Cubs. The Cubs pounded out 10
hits in each game. Leading the way again were Dan Gould, 2 for 3 with
a double and 2 of the 3 runs the Cubbies scored, and Tom Barnes who
was 2 for 3 and he reached by an error. John Sudkin also collected
two singles. Bryon Withers picked up 2 RBIs in this game and 3 for
day to pull into a tie with Eddie Murray for the team RBI lead. Package
had another hit to go 4 for 6 in the double header and raise his batting
average 100 points.
