Box Score

In the first game of the double header, the Cardinals stole a game from the Cubs. The Cubs had the better offense, but just couldn't seem to push across the key run to win the game. Sloppy Cubs defense paved the way for the Cardinals victory. The Cards scored six runs and only two of the runs were earned. Tom Barnes started and threw 5 and a third strong innings before giving way to Bryon Withers. Bryon took the loss but pitched very well striking out 5 of the 7 outs he recorded.

Offensively, the Cubs had some stars. Tony Leary had the best offensive game of his Cubs career. Package was 3 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs. Dan Gould who has been recently moved to the leadoff spot, seems to be getting better each week. He had a nearly perfect leadoff hitter day with a single, two walks, two runs scored and three stolen bases. Tom Barnes had a great game going 2 for 3 with a double, 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. Andy Luckhardt was 2 for 4 with a triple and run scored.
